One of the most fascinating aspects of sourcing oriental carpets and flat weave rugs, is that at times and unexpectedly you come a cross few unusual and incredibly good-looking pieces were either you do not know about them or simply referring to them as a rug or Kilim. It is even more fascinating when the name associated with these pieces is something, which you never heard of. Even to Persians, name of Ghorabaei was something that belonged to the previous generations. This name normally associated with the secluded people who lived as a group, had hardly any involvement with city people and minding their own business. It is only when you find their handmade productions such as Kilims and rugs then you begin to admire their beauty. Ghorabaei Kilims in fact are belonging to the tribes in the villages near the ancient town of Torbat e Ja~m about 160km South West of Meshed Province. Even though the handmade Kilim weaving from this region mainly related to Blouch rugs and with no obvious long history, however tribes living in the villages around the area have been quite active making these decorative pieces for the past few decades. Initially these were made for the personal usage, however due to their popularity, gradually mass production of Kilims and Sofreh became the commercial venture for the inhabitants. This highly decorative flat weave Kilim measuring 150x125 (4’9”x4”) with interesting diamond patterns in lovely pastel colours is one of these exciting discoveries.
