From Southern Tribes in Fars Province such as Qashqai, Khamseh, Kashkuli, Afshar, Bakhtiari and Luri to the village weavers spread across Kurdish mountains, in the North West, the exquisite weaves and variations of colours have been magnificently displayed everywhere. Despite their simplicity, not two Persian tribal rugs look the same and part of this fascination is that almost entire design created from the imagination of the weavers during the weaving. • Caucasian Tribal Rugs

The main attraction of Caucasian rugs is that they are lively, abstract, bold and noticeable. Despite their short cut piles, Caucasian rugs are normally very strong, both in quality and in design. They can be used absolutely anywhere in the house, but they do require an environment that can match the strength and character of the motifs. Another distinctive feature of the Caucasian rugs is that of their naturally dyed colours in particular background blues and reds which give any dull interior arrays of magnificent antique but vibrant look. No wonder there is such a buzz buying old antique Caucasian rugs whether made from Shirvan, Daghestan, Kuba or Kazakhstan.

    • Turkmen Tribal Rugs

Of all nomadic tribal weaves, the Turkmen rugs are among the most distinctive, as well as being the most inventive. Believed to have come from the steppes of Asia at least two thousand years ago, the Turkmen traversed a vast area stretching from the Caspian sea in the west to Tibet in the East, bounded North and South by the borders of Russia and Persia. Although almost all Turkmen rugs from various tribes such as Tekke, Yamout, Ersari, Chodor, Salor have similar octagonal shaped motifs (Gul Design), however, this is where the similarity ends as each of these diverse groups has their own unique styles of motifs and colours. Fine and crispy Turkmen rugs have always been popular amongst both dealers and consumers, in particular, the ones made during the nineteen and early 20th centuries.

    • Afghan Tribal Rugs

Although there are many similarities both in design and colours between Turkmen and Afghan tribal rugs, but it is important to put Afghan carpets into a different category due to their characteristic weaves and their significant influence on the European markets, particularly since the turn of the 20th century. It seems many foreign invasions in different parts of their history, had an insignificant impact. Quite contrary if anything it has made Afghan people, even more, determine to develop their skills, hence producing and exporting some of the most sturdy and wonderful carpets to all over the world. Rich colours and coarser foundation distinguish Afghan rugs from those of Turkmen but at the same time, the artistry of making fine rugs such as Khal Mohamadi, or Mina Khani has added an extra edge to the production of Afghan rugs.
