Despite their short cut piles, Caucasian rugs are normally very strong, both in quality and in design. Another distinctive feature of the Caucasian rugs is that of their naturally dyed colours in particular background blues and reds which give any dull interior arrays of magnificent antique but vibrant look. Of all nomadic tribal weaves, the Turkmen rugs are among the most distinctive, as well as being the most inventive. Although almost all Turkmen rugs from various tribes such as Tekke, Yamout, Ersari, Chodor, Salor have similar octagonal shaped motifs (Gul Design), however, this is where the similarity ends as each of these diverse groups has their own unique styles of motifs and colours. • Afghan Tribal Rugs

Although there are many similarities both in design and colours between Turkmen and Afghan tribal rugs, but it is important to put Afghan carpets into a different category due to their characteristic weaves and their significant influence on the European markets, particularly since the turn of the 20th century. It seems many foreign invasions in different parts of their history, had an insignificant impact. Quite contrary if anything it has made Afghan people, even more, determine to develop their skills, hence producing and exporting some of the most sturdy and wonderful carpets to all over the world. Rich colours and coarser foundation distinguish Afghan rugs from those of Turkmen but at the same time, the artistry of making fine rugs such as Khal Mohamadi, or Mina Khani has added an extra edge to the production of Afghan rugs.
